Major John Kippen In the doorway of a
61st TCG C-47 at Chipping Ongar

OP VARSITY/PLUNDER

Operation Varsity 24/03/45. After being dropped by the 61st TCG, the 8th Battalion Para Regt came under heavy fire on the DZ. B Company Commander, Major John Kippen, eventually assembled a force of about platoon strength and assaulted the enemy positions. During this assault Major Kippen was Killed in Action. The attack was resumed by another platoon of B Company and the objective was taken.
