I have recently been in touch with several of Sgt Wells relatives in the States who have provided some new information on him. Not only had he only just turned 22 years old but had been married less than a month to English girl Gladys Taylor, possibly from Lincoln. Gladys gave birth to a son in the following June so it is possible that Stanley knew that he was a Father. The young mother and child remained in the UK. This is a rather faded newspaper clipping of the couple.

Dave
Greetings from Kansas in the USA. This is my first post as I have just become aware of this wonderful site in the last couple of days. Thanks so much to DaveB1964 for inviting me to join. My relationship to Stanley is first cousin once removed. He and my father were first cousins. I believe that Miss Taylor was from Lincoln as stated above. One very slight correction is that after Stanley was killed, Gladys moved with her son to Stanley's hometown in Iowa. I don't know how long she stayed there, perhaps it was only for a visit in the first place. In any event, she eventually took her son and returned to England. I do not know what became of them after this, but I do know that Stanley and Gladys eventually had at least one grandson. I'm very much looking forward to investigating this site in the days ahead.

Debbie Smith a distant relation has provided this information after visiting the local archive, note that the date is incorrectly recorded as the 19th December 1944.

'Here's what I found today: (the article did not say Keokuk, Iowa, but that is the city Lotsy was living in, so I added it).

From the Clark County Courier Jan. 19, 1945 Volume # 20

Stanley Wells is Reported Killed
(Keokuk Gate City)
Mrs. Lotsy Wells, 1529 Des Moines street, Keokuk, Iowa, learned Jan. 11, that her son, S. Sgt. Stanley R. Wells, 22, was killed on Dec. 19, in England, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Word was received here by Mrs. Wells indirectly from the Keokuk soldier's British bride of only a few weeks, the former Miss Gladys Taylor of St. Giles, Lincoln, England. They were married on Nov. 23, 1944, and a picture of them taken after their marriage has also just been received here along with the news of Sgt. Wells' death. Besides his mother here, Sgt. Wells has a sister, Dorothy Wells, at home; and a brother Eston Wells, S 1-c, serving with the navy in the Pacific. Another sister, Mrs. Ida Frances Hayden, died about six years ago. '
