S/Sgt Montgomery was wounded in the plane and believed to be dying. 2nd Lt. Hendry(Navigator) recalled that Montgomery was holding on to his trouser leg, but by the time they bailed out his arms were limp. 1st Lt. Hitztaler (Pilot) was the last to exit the ship. He did not see anyone when he bailed out. However, Hitztaler went out the escape hatch so it is unlikely he could have seen Montgomery. Montgomery's body was found in the wreckage and buried but his grave was not marked properly, hence the MIA listing.
